About Rebecca Magalhães
Rebecca was accredited as a La Leche League Leader in 1977 and continues volunteering on the local level as an active LLL Leader. She is the former director of the LLLI External Relations & Advocacy Department (1993 – 2009). As the director, Rebecca facilitated joint activities and networking relationships with international agencies and other non-profit voluntary organizations, including the World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), The Child Survival Collaborations and Resources Group (CORE), UNICEF, and the World Health Organization. She traveled for LLLI to attend workshops and meetings representing the organization and breastfeeding. Currently retired, Rebecca continues to work with WABA as the co-Editor of the WABA Mother Support Task Force (MSTF) Electronic Newsletter, which comes out in English, Spanish, French, Portuguese, and Arabic. She has worked with the newsletter production since 2002. She is also involved in the writing of a book chapter for mother support.
A former Peace Corps Volunteer, Rebecca lived for 11 years in Brasil and founded the first Portuguese speaking LLL group in Maceió, Alagoas, which is still a functioning group. She is a co-author of a breastfeeding book in Portuguese “Amamentar: Por Que Não?” While living in Brasil, she worked with UNICEF/Brasil and the Brasilian Health Department on an innovative project to train low-income mothers as peer counselors. She is the mother of 5 children and the grandmother of 12 grandchildren, 19 to 9 years of age, all breastfed.
